How Much Longer?
In 2005, Richard Dean Anderson was very much involved with Sea Shepherd’s campaign to save harp seals. He was even on the SSCS board of directors. In 2008, Daryl Hannah helped shine the spotlight on anti-whaling. Hayden Panettiere was in Taiji during the making of The Cove movie and she is the spokesperson for The Whaleman Foundation. In October, Leilani Münter was actually a Cove Guardian.

Is that it? Where are the rest of the stars? The Cove PSA video has a ton of them, but we need some of them to come out of their comfort zone and be Cove Guardians. Meanwhile dolphins are being killed. They are having their insides yanked out of them while they are still alive as their family watches. The lucky ones are being punched by trainers before going into a lifetime of slavery. The lucky ones had to watch as their mothers were butchered in front of them before being dragged off to a lifetime of slavery. The lucky ones were able to hold their breath long enough not to drown while trainers held them underwater. The lucky ones had to watch members of their family who weren’t so lucky and couldn’t hold their breath as long.
Maybe if we concentrate on getting a copy of The Cove to celebrities, they might watch it. Maybe that is the motivation they need, because I can’t imagine that they actually saw The Cove and did not make an effort to become a Cove Guardian. There are so many of us regular people who wish we could go to Taiji, yet are unable to. It is unfathomable that the people who can both make a difference and actually have the financial means, would not go to The Cove after seeing the movie. I simply can’t accept the concept. It is quite clear to me that they really don’t know what is going on.
We need Jennifer Aniston as a Cove Guardian. We need Ben Stiller in Taiji. We need Robin Williams at the cove. We need Courtney Cox, Pierce Brosnan, Mariska Hargitay, Sir Paul McCartney, Jorge Garcia, Alicia Silverstone, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Kartherine Heigl, Hulk Hogan, Whoopi Goldberg, Pamela Anderson, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Linda Blair, Kim Basinger, Dave Matthews, Christina Applegate or any animal loving celebrity to step up and be a Cove Guardian! I am calling you out! Watch The Cove! Don’t be afraid. If I can do it, so can you. Are you broke? Did you blow all of your money? I am willing to bet you can get a sponsor if you announce that you need one. Are you not too keen on seeing blood? That’s okay. You can just stand on the beach and educate the masses who will undoubtedly be there to see you.
Now before anyone asks why stars at The Cove would be beneficial, please read Do You See Stars? If anyone still has the urge to say that celebrities at The Cove wouldn’t make a difference or something really stupid about the idea being a crutch, just keep keep it to yourself so that we don’t have to use the Jaws Of Life to get your foot out of your mouth.

Excellent report and I always love your sense of humour.
I have wondered time and time again why some of the celebrities that generally are so active in providing their voice to important causes, can’t seem to be bothered to at least make an appearance.
Can you imagine the number of local and international media that would show up if just one of these stars showed up ?
Honestly, I am very thankful for what they do and have done and the newest video with all the stars you mentioned (Jennifer Aniston, Ben Stiller et al) is incredible.
However, don’t tell me they don’t have the time or resources to do so. This may not be a popular thing to say but even Michelle Rodrigues could have gone to the Cove for a day, something that would have garnered significant media exposure.
Once again, this is not to say, me and others don’t appreciate what some celebrities have already done. We do. Especially considering how few ever do anything at all.
Holise just makes such an important point, something I wish these people, who have been so wonderfully blessed with fame and fortune, would take into consideration.
It’s one thing to give a few minutes of your time but it certainly would show the world that you are prepared to really stand up for what you believe in and it’s not all talk.
The big question might not be why don’t they as much as how do we get hold of them to convince them to do so !!
If everyone starts a blog and makes a big deal out of it, the right people will take notice.
As usual, Holise, you are right on target. I know where I’d be if I had the money to go. If hey can do a PSA for something they have (hopefully) thought about, then they should be willing to go and bring some media attention to the place it’s actually happening.
I do appreciate that most celebrities already donate to and support a lot of causes but this one is just as important. We can’t help anyone if our oceans die.
If all the animal welfare activists would concentrate on this one issue, it would be over in a week. We would have so much power if we all joined together for one battle at a time. It tears me up to know what animals are going through so that people can have fur, leather and even milk; but if the seas die none of it will matter. Why doesn’t everyone understand this? We should be finished with Taiji and whaling by now. We should be setting our sights on the Faroes, finning and captivity issues. We could then move to land and change the world in time to save it. Instead, everyone has their own agenda. Everyone picks the battle that they want to fight. Meanwhile, the war is dragging on and may just continue into extinction.
I agree with you Holise. It could be laziness, don’t really care, or claim to be too busy. I also do wish that more famous people would get involved. I have been reading a lot on facebook about Michelle Rodriquez getting involved with Sea Shepherd. I don’t know if she will pop up in Taiji, Japan and be a Cove Guardian, but if she cares about Whales then she should support the dolphins. I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy reading your blog. It is so informative, makes me laugh because you bring truth up into the faces of people. A lot of the time people don’t want to hear the truth because then it looks like they agree with you and well if they don’t that is the problem with them. Thank you so much for your time and for caring. Just wanted to let you know how I feel.
Michelle is doing so much more than anyone is right now. I am very proud of her. She is an active activist and therefore untouchable on this subject. She is one person, which leaves all of the other celebrities to question. Where are they?
Thank you for bringing up this topic. I do think that the Japanese people will take more notice if more stars are involved.

Hey Holise,
I was thinking of your blog and the great idea you had with respect to celebrities. I followed your suit and posted messages on Jennifer Aniston, Robin Williams and Ben Stiller’s fb pages.
Then I thought, what about other stars since these celebrities might feel that they have done ‘something’ to help already.
The other thing is that there are many, many celebrities who may also be interested and even if not, they have a HUGE following.
Then I started to think about what celebrities might be the best to contact which lead to some dilemma despite all the common names that might come to mind.
I posted a message to Courtney Cox (who was also in that recent Dolphins/Friend Video), Pam Anderson (A huge animal lover and just as big a following – and I will leave my big comments to just that – ha).
Insomuch as these are popular celebrities, I then had to think of who are the more popular stars of today. Not my generation but the younger crowd because they are certainly going to be a significant audience to educate and convince to get involved.
Some that I considered are people like Taylor Lautner (Twilight movie series), Robert Pattinson (same movies) and Kristen Stewart (ditto).
There are obviously a lot more not to mention our generation age (Holise !) celebrities.
I guess the point is, I was shocked at how many members (“friends”) these young stars have. I mean Taylor Lautner, for example, had a a lot of different pages some with over a million “friends”.
Obvioulsly, most of these are set up by fans, if not all, however, what an exception target. Even if the stars themselves don’t see the posts, I have been including photos as well as links to the Japanese government and to that Friend video.
So, I guess you have really come up with something special and significant here, Holise. I just hope people will take the reins and run with it. Everyone knows some high profile celebrity and there is an endless supply of names where we can post our messages, links to videos and photos.
These leads could generate a significant purge of emails and attention that we certainly couldn’t buy with advertising.
Good work buddy !!!
That’s the best news I’ve heard all day! This is one angle I do not plan to give up on. Thank you, David!
Holise, a couple of things:
I downloaded wordpress yesterday but have not toyed with it since I’m so pressed by deadlines to finish all translations by yearend. The deadlines need to be met b/c I’ve pledged to set aside a part of my pay in support of SSCS. The sooner I get those projects out of the way, the sooner I can redirect some of the money to SSCS.
I am however excited about blogging and will start my posting by translating the news clips on SSCS into mandarin Chinese. It’s a God-given gift, this language thing, and I intend to use it for the cause. I’ve actually started translating the news piece of SSCS’s supporting a joint statement by US/AUS/NZ/Netherlands against whaling. It was great fun. I’ll post it on my blog and link it to yours – again, as soon as I get these projects out of the way.
Lastly, I’ve viewed David’s wall and copied his messages, pleading for the celebrities to go to Taiji. Shakira and Bill Clinton came to mind so here I went, posting.
These messages, however, tend to “drown out” in the sea of other fan messages. It might be more effective, I think, if I print photos of the bloody cove and a letter in snail mail to the PR offices of these celebs. The envelope will have the Taipei City Government stamp and hopefully that’d get their attention.
It’d be great if you can find the physical addresses of their PR offices. I’ll see what I can do on this end of the Pacific.
You are something else, Shannon! I commend you. Keep up the great work.
Great Video Holise! Right on Target! Keep On Keepin On… Posting on Facebook & Twitter Now… For the Dolphins…. Cheryl
